In 16th century, wearing cloth stitched with cut silhouettes (black and white images of people and nature) spread among the nobility. Then came folk papercutting. Papercuts were used to decorate icons, windows, furniture and walls in the house. Images for papercuts were borrowed from weaving, embroidery, pottery, wood carving and had symbolic meaning.

In the 1980s professional artists began to revive papercutting. Modern Belarusian paper cutting has become one of the most common kinds of decorative and applied art. It stands out for its various themes, technique, design decisions and always focuses on traditional folklore.

At Svasthi sarees after much trial and error we have successfully incorporated a famous Belarusian paper cutting design as a motif on the pallu in pure zari. The pure silk thread dotted arrow lines on the body are indicative of the first and most basic rule of lines in design drawings - solid lines indicate visible or “real” objects or surfaces, while dots and/or dashes indicate objects “hidden” from view. The pallu also has Maan/ deer in zari pett. The pallu’s edge in the centre finishes with Swarga vassal motifs woven in pure zari.
