If we delve into the history of the Kanjivaram it becomes apparent that the motifs and designs are closely interrelated to the temples of Kanchipuram. For instance, the yalis (mythical creature), the annapakshi and the mango motif from the temples. Kanchi’s ancient temples are an eternal source of inspiration. Motifs of flowers, button buttas, aayiram buttas, kaan kodi, vines, coins, animals, birds/paravai and yalis are sourced from the intricate carvings on the pillars, walls and vimanas of the Varadaraja Perumal, Vaikunta Perumal temples and many more.
We at Svasthi have tried to revive a classic pure 4 ply silk saree in pure zari inspired from the picture of Mrinalini Sarabhai from Pinterest.
Mrinalini Sarabhai (1918-2016) believed strongly in tradition but did not hesitate to face contemporary issues head on. She gave classical dance new directions and a new vocabulary.
The body of the saree is in traditional shades of red and yellow with kattams along small kamalam in the centre of the red kattam. There is Thazhampoo along the two edges of the border. The pallu has thick zari pett motifs of paisley, yali, annapakshi and kamalam motifson both edges of the pallu with Banarasi Bhavaji in zari in the middle. The border has zari rettai pett borders.
